If awarded a scholarship, you will be notified via email and you will see a notification on the “Applications” tab of the scholarship application site under “Active”. You will also hear from financial aid stating that your financial aid award letter has been updated. If you are not selected for a scholarship, you will see a notification on the Home tab of the website indicating your application was reviewed and not selected.

Monarch Butterfly Scholarship

The Monarch Butterfly scholarships include 10 scholarships ranging from $6,500 to $10,000. To apply, you must:

  • Be an immigrant student who attended at least 3 years of high school in the United States
  • Be a full-time enrolled, returning undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
  • Be a non-FAFSA filer and provide a signed copy of completed Institutional Need Assessment form from the office of Financial Aid

Print and fill out the Scholarship Application and the Institutional Need Assessment form to apply.

Turn in your application to Patricia Santoyo-Marin in the Lincoln Park Student Center, Suite 105F, by November 10.

Scholarships for English Majors

Applications due October 15th, 2017

The English department invites applications for three scholarships available to English majors:

  • Ellin M. Kelly, Ph.D. Endowed British Literature Award ($1500)
  • Honors English Scholarship ($2800)
  • Mary Zavada Memorial Endowed Scholarship ($2450)

Each scholarship has different requirements, outlined below. You may also download a PDF with the same information.

To apply for any of the scholarships you must complete the following steps:

  1. If you have not done so already for the current academic year, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid​) and have the results sent to DePaul University. This is only required for need-based scholarships. Please note that you are not required to accept a financial aid package in order to be considered for need-based scholarships. You need only fill out and submit the application. Any federal financial aid accepted on your behalf through the FAFSA process is your responsibility.
  2. Complete the General Application:
    • Log into the DePaul Online Scholarship Application using your Campus Connect ID and password.
    • Complete and submit the General Application.
      • Once your application has been completed and submitted successfully, it will be marked with a green checkmark.
      • If it is gray, the application was not submitted successfully; try again.
  3. After submitting the General Application, you will automatically route to opportunities for which you qualify and more information is needed. If you are recommended for additional scholarships, you will be able to view a list of opportunities.  Apply for them by clicking on the blue “Apply” button beside each scholarship.  Additional questions or information may be required to complete the application process.

After Submitting an Application

Ellin M. Kelly, Ph.D. Endowed British Literature Award, $1500

The Kelly Endowed British Literature Award recognizes the academic achievement of students who have demonstrated their dedication to the study of British literature. Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible for this scholarship.  Students must be English majors with a GPA of at least 3.5, and they must have completed at least three English courses.

Applicants for this scholarship will need to upload the following documents with their electronic application:

  • A 400-500-word statement highlighting your dedication to the study of British literature as demonstrated through your coursework, including independent studies or research projects, as well as any related extracurricular activities or future plans.
  • An up-to-date transcript (unofficial transcripts downloaded from Campus Connect are fine).
  • An essay dealing with British literature from any period.

The Honors English Scholarship, $2800

The Honors English scholarship provides financial assistance to Honors students who are also English majors or double majors. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be enrolled in the Honors Program, have demonstrated financial need, have a minimum GPA of 3.3, and have completed at least three English courses.

Applicants for the Honors English Scholarship will need to upload the following documents with their electronic application:

  • A 400-500-word statement highlighting your academic engagement and achievement in the English major and the Honors Program and indicating how this scholarship will help you financially.
  • An up-to-date transcript (unofficial transcripts downloaded from Campus Connect are fine).
  • A writing sample (a literary essay or a creative work produced for one of your classes)

The Mary Zavada Memorial Endowed Scholarship, $2450

The Mary Zavada Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to students majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing; students who are double-majoring in English must have a primary major in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.  You must be at least a sophomore, be in good academic standing, and have demonstrated financial need to be eligible for this award.

Applicants for this scholarship will need to upload the following documents with their electronic application:

  • An up-to-date transcript (unofficial transcripts downloaded from Campus Connect are fine).
  • A sample of your creative writing (short story, set of poems, essay, etc.).

New Course: Research Grants and Scholarships

Spring 2017

Do you want to live and study abroad and serve as a cultural ambassador? Do you want to learn more about applying for prestigious national scholarships? Would you like to get dedicated assistance in crafting an eye-catching personal statement and research proposal? DePaul has a course for you!

This spring quarter DePaul is offering a section of HON 300 Honors Research Seminar: Research Grants and Scholarships devoted to helping students apply for prestigious national scholarships such as the Boren, Fulbright, Marshall and Truman awards. These fully-funded scholarships provide students with living and travel allowances so they can reside abroad while learning languages, teaching English, or carrying out an independent research project.

HON 300 is a two-credit course.  Enrollment is open to all students.  If you are enrolled in 12-16 credits, adding this section of HON 300 does not add to your tuition expenses.

The course will meet on alternating Fridays, 10:00-1:00, on the following dates:

April 7
April 21
May 5
May 19
June 2

HON300 will be taught by Professor Phillip Stalley, a member of the Political Science Department and DePaul’s Fulbright Program Advisor.

HSBC Scholarship Available (deadline 10/1/2014)

Are you an English major who passed PHL 248 or REL 228?  Is this your junior or senior year?  Do you have a GPA higher than 3.0?  If so, you are encouraged to apply for the HSBC- North America Business Ethics Scholarship before October 15, 2014.

The HSBC-North America Business Ethics Scholarship Program will offer TWO scholarships for outstanding DePaul students. The two scholarship recipients must be either juniors or seniors in Autumn Quarter 2014 and will be awarded $4,500 in Winter and Spring Quarters 2015 ($2250 per quarter).
