Thoughts from DePaul ASK Mentor (and English alumna) Christine Baron

I’m sure as English majors we’ve all faced the inevitable confusion, indifference, or even scorn that comes when we cheerfully share our major and chosen academic trajectory.

DePaul ASK mentor and English alumna Christine Baron recently wrote an article discussing what she’s been able to do with her degree in English. Check it out here for some insight!

DePaul’s ASK (alumni Sharing Knowledge) program is a great resource, folks! From their website:

“DePaul Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) is a network of alumni and friends who serve as career mentors, working with students one-on-one, in practice interviews and at job fairs, and speaking at networking events and open houses throughout the university. ASK mentors were once DePaul students, so they know what you are going through. Whether you are exploring majors or career options or searching for a job that aligns with your passion, talking to someone who’s been there can help. There are over 1,000 mentors in ASK at any given time who represent a variety of professional expertise. Have your A-HA moment with ASK!”

THIS WEEK! ASK (Alumni Sharing Knowledge) Event, 9/23/14

Greetings, Underground readers! As your friendly grad-student-cum-editor (read: well-versed in the old job hunt), I can never stress enough the importance of building your network. As a truism we all know goes, It’s not just what you know, it’s who you know.

Join Alumni Sharing Knowledge‘s (ASK) kickoff networking breakfast for the school year as we discover careers that are projected to rapidly grow.  Leading the discussion will be DePaul alumna and ASK mentor Mary Williamson.

Mary is a full-cycle recruiter who hires for a variety of levels and roles, from entry level all the way to the C-Suite and executive level. With nearly 20 years of talent acquisition experience, Mary has recruited in a variety of industries including healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, finance, sales, and science.  She is excited to share the trends she sees in jobs that are currently in demand and will offer you tips on how to get ahead of the competition.

Enjoy light breakfast, lively conversation, and open networking with ASK mentors, alumni professionals, and students.  Open to DePaul students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Newspaper columnists in a digital age….

You remember Kenny Lapins right?

Yes that Kenny, who so graciously shared his wisdom about post-DePaul employment as a professional freelance writer. (Here’s his profile, in case you forgot)

Well Kenny just did an interview with DePaul’s ASK Network (Alumni Sharing Knowledge) about being “a newspaper columnist in a digital age”.  Online writing portfolios, Einstein and automatic toliets and “the insidious nature of glitter”…check out the rest of the interview.
