Catfish Creek open for submissions

Catfish Creek, the national undergraduate literary journal published by Loras College, is now reading for our seventh edition, to be released in spring of 2017.

Submission Guidelines:
Any student currently registered in an undergraduate program is eligible to submit. If we accept your work, we will ask for proof of your current enrollment. All submissions should be sent electronically, as MS-Word (.doc or .docx) or RTF attachments, to Catfish.Creek@loras.edu.  Please specify the genre of your submission (poetry, fiction, nonfiction) in the Subject line of your message.
Ex: Fiction submission—“Story Title”

All submissions should use standard margins and readable 12-point font (Courier, Times, etc.). Prose (fiction or nonfiction) should be double-spaced, with pages numbered. Also, please provide your name, college affiliation, home and e-mail address on the first page of your submission. This will allow us to contact you with a response. And because we want to know who you are, please include a brief cover letter and short bio in the body of the e-mail.

Our reading period is September 1-Dec. 10. Any manuscripts received outside of that time will be deleted unread.

As a general rule we place no restrictions on style or subject matter. While we do not consider straight genre pieces (SF, fantasy, horror, etc.) we will consider literary-quality writing that crosses genre lines. We are also not looking for work that depicts excessive violence, though exceptions might be made if the work exhibits literary merit.

Catfish Creek will happily read simultaneous submissions, provided that you notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Response time varies depending on the number of submissions, but we will do our best to respond to you within 3-4 months. Feel free to query the editor at Catfish.Creek@loras.edu if you have not received a reply after six months. Also, please do not send a new submission until we have responded to the first.

Payment for accepted works is two copies of the issue. Catfish Creek buys first North American serial rights. Should you re-publish the piece at a later date, we ask that you acknowledge that we published it first.

Poetry: No style or length restrictions, though we don’t have room for book-length poems. Submit up to three poems at a time, as separate attachments.

Nonfiction: Submit literary nonfiction: memoir, reflective essays, New Journalism-style writing, nature writing. Please submit one essay at a time (unless they are very short, in which case send up to three). Maximum length: 4000 words.

Fiction: We’re interested in literary fiction of any style: realistic or experimental, flash fiction, short-shorts, and full-length short stories. Please send one full-length story or up to three flash fiction pieces at a time. Maximum length: 4000 words.

Write for the Underground!

hands-coffee-cup-appleCalling all DePaul English majors! Are you looking for more ways to get your writing out there? Do you enjoy attending literary events?

The Underground is looking for student contributors to write short, informal articles for the website. Gain writing experience, build your resume, and get involved in the literary community at DePaul and beyond.

The pieces would be 1,200 words or less. We are open to interviews, event recaps, and any noteworthy topics in keeping with the Underground’s mission statement.

If you are interested in writing for the Underground, email Underground editor Anne Terashima at aterashi@depaul.edu. Anne will then email you each Monday with a list of possible article topics. If you see one that interests you, let her know by 10 a.m. Tuesday. Turnaround time is 1-3 days, depending on the topic.

Call for submissions, internships from C&R Press

Independent publisher C&R Press is now accepting submissions! They are also seeking two editorial interns and a social media intern. Read on for details:

C&R Press is now reading submissions in Fiction, Creative Non Fiction, and Poetry. We’ll entertain excellent genre fiction submissions, as well.

Also, for all sci-fi and fantasy poets: we are looking for poetry for an upcoming anthology.

C&R Press is looking for two editorial interns.
We are looking for applicants with exceptional writing and editing skills, sharp analytic skills, meticulous attention to detail and factual accuracy, and familiarity with Microsoft Office, Internet research, and social networking platforms (Twitter, FB, Pinterest, Tumblr). We’re willing to develop the right candidates. Must also be a self starter and capable of working independently. Interns will work remotely and Skype/phone with directors regularly.

Editorial internships are typically available each semester and for the summer term: Sept-Dec, Jan-April and Jun-August. We are flexible and prefer to keep interns with us for 6 months to, potentially, a year for the right candidate. This is unpaid though we’ve been known to give bonuses. You will receive unparalleled access to the directors, training, a lot of responsibility and a fantastic reference. School credit available. Interns are thoroughly involved in the process. If you stay with us for the year and beyond, you will get an editorial credit. We will put effort in to develop you and go to bat for you if you do well.

Reading Intern
will work closely with the entire staff. Ideal candidates will have some knowledge of the C&R titles and its authors, and will be well-read, articulate, and motivated to seek out new and original literary voices. While assisting with a wide range of projects, interns will gain hands-on experience and training in most aspects of editorial work, while also gaining a good understanding of literary publishing and the business side of things.

Interns’ responsibilities will include:
• A commitment to work fifteen to twenty hours per week for the duration (flexible for the rightcandidate).
• Reading, evaluating and reporting on fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions.
• Editorial administrative work (Building lists, writing synopses, fact checking, editing).
• Seeking out promising new authors by reading print and online journals, blogs, etc.
• Working on special projects as needed.
• Assisting all members of the editorial staff as needed

Best Qualified candidates will have:
• Knowledge about and passion for the contemporary publishing industry.
• Knowledge of contemporary literature.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work independently.
• Computer literacy (must have a computer).
• Undergraduate experience in English, Communications or a related field.
• Advanced reading knowledge of a foreign language (bonus).

Admin/Business Intern
will work closely with the entire staff. Ideal candidates will have an understanding of the publishing business, business modeling, administrative experience, and will be well-read, articulate, and motivated. This candidate must be OK with making phone calls and be detail oriented. While assisting with a wide range of projects, the intern will gain hands-on experience and training in most aspects of the administrative work of running a small company, while also gaining a good understanding of literary publishing and larger literary trends.

Interns’ responsibilities will include:
• A commitment to work fifteen to twenty hours per week for the duration (flexible for the right candidate).
• Editorial administrative work (Building lists, fact checking, hunting down submission deadlines and paperwork, etc).
• Working on special research projects as needed.
• Some travel planning assistance, informational calls, and scheduling
• To a lesser extent: Seeking out promising new authors by reading print and online journals, blogs, etc.

Best Qualified candidates will have:
• Knowledge about and passion for the contemporary publishing industry.
• Administrative experience.
• Sense of humor.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work independently and follow direction.
• Computer literacy (must have a computer).
• Undergraduate experience in English, Communications or a related field.
• Spanish Fluency (a bonus).

Editorial internships are intended for those who are serious about pursuing this particular field. We will prioritize 3rd and 4th year undergraduate applicants as well as grad student applicants. Please indicate in your cover letter whether or not you might be available for marketing and advertising. All interns are expected to help with general office e -administrative tasks such as data entry, emailing, and other various support tasks as needed.

While assisting with all social media aspects, interns will gain hands-on experience and training in editorial work, branding, and event coordination while also gaining a good understanding of literary publishing and the business side of things.

Interns’ responsibilities will include:
• A commitment to work fifteen to twenty hours per week for the duration (flexible for the right candidate).
• Reading, evaluating and reporting on literary trends and social media output.
• Editorial administrative work (Building lists, writing synopses, fact checking, editing).
• Speaking with authors (ages 24-70+) by phone and email.
• Working on special projects as needed.

Best Qualified candidates will have:
• Knowledge about and passion for the contemporary publishing industry.
• High proficiency in Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr.
• Knowledge of contemporary literature.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work independently.
• Computer literacy (must have a computer).
• Undergraduate experience in English, Communications or a related field.
• Advanced reading knowledge of a foreign language (bonus).

The wait is almost over for the Chicago Women in Publishing’s (CWIP) 2016 Fall Kickoff gala on Wednesday, September 21! Everyone is invited to join us to learn more about CWIP, our upcoming 2016-2017 programming year and help us celebrate our local publishing community. After a summer hiatus, the Fall Kickoff is CWIP’s biggest event of the year and always features an exciting speaker.

This year’s speaker, April Eberhardt, is a world-recognized and self-described “literary change agent” who is leading her clients through the changing landscape of publishing, and she’ll be sharing her wisdom and experience about the future of publishing with us. We are fortunate to have Eberhardt because she divides her time between San Francisco, New York, and Paris, but will be in Chicago specifically to join CWIP for the Kickoff. You won’t want to miss this dynamic speaker!

The annual Fall Kickoff is a great opportunity for CWIP members to connect or reconnect and for anyone interested in publishing to network and make new friends. Corporate partners and sponsors will also be on hand for networking and to answer your questions.

The ticket price includes hors d’oeuvres and a free wine, beer, or soft drink, along with a raffle ticket for a one-year CWIP membership and other publishing goodies. Additional raffle tickets may be purchased that evening.

English students! Do you have a stellar research paper you’ve written for a DPU English class or Newberry Library Seminar? Would you like to see your research in print? The English Dept has extended the deadline for submissions to Creating Knowledge. You may submit your work until MIDNIGHT tonight, Friday, May 6th.

The English Department seeks submissions for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ annual student research journal, Creating Knowledge. If you aren’t aware of Creating Knowledge, learn more about the publication here. It’s a great opportunity for students to get their work recognized and published in a university-wide setting, and it looks wonderful on a CV!
