Summer Job Opportunity: AmeriCorps and Northwestern Settlement

AmeriCorps and Northwestern Settlement are searching for individuals for two of their summer positions. Descriptions below:

AmeriCorps Member Camp Counselor (Seasonal June 29-Aug 16; Living Stipend and Education Award) – This position is only available for current students as it includes an education award. The Junior AmeriCorps members will be in charge of working with the campers on devising/producing their production. They will supervise campers and lead daily activities, working closely with Teaching Artists to design and implement lesson plans.

Co-Lead Teaching Artist (seasonal, 30/hr (June 29-Aug.16) +$500 planning stipend before camp starts) – Co Lead Teaching Artists plan and implement all programming during the day for an ensemble of 30 students ages 9-14. Through drama activities, discussions and field trips, Trailblazer Campers will devise their own performance to present at the end of the 7 weeks. Teaching Artists guide this process along.

The DePaul Career Center will host their annual Fall Career Fair on Wednesday, October 2nd and Thursday, October 3rd from 3:00 – 6:00 pm in the Lincoln Park Student Center 120AB. Help to build workshops that focus on creating equitable environments for diverse learners. Research best practices for developmental education. Aim to create scaffolding opportunities for learning objectives.

In turn, the intern will learn to investigate the following areas:

Learn how to craft lesson plans, organize coursework, and build a syllabus that emphasize student engagement and rhetorical application. Discuss and develop teaching philosophy.

Interns will meet with Alye face-to-face at least three times over the summer session.

Creative Writing Fellowship Opportunity

The Creative Writing Fellowship awards two $7,500 Luminarts Fellowships for excellence in creative writing in the categories of prose and poetry, in fiction and nonfiction. Applicants submit a two-page written piece (either a stand-alone piece or an excerpt of a larger piece such as a novel or short story). Entries are submitted and reviewed by an initial panel of jurors. Once reviewed, all top entries go to the final juror panel and the winners are selected. A note from Jessica Best, creator of a sci-fi podcast: “I have a paid opportunity for your students, if they are interested in sci-fi and script-writing. My award-winning audio fiction podcast, The Strange Case of Starship Iris, is heading towards its second season, and I’m looking to hire staff writers for the writers’ room. The pay would be $60 per (roughly 40-minute) episode. Writers of color, transgender writers, nonbinary writers, and/or queer writers are especially encouraged to apply. The deadline is October 15th.

Student Election Day Service Opportunity

From the Cook County Clerk’s office:

Democracy doesn’t just happen.  College students can make a difference in local elections, but they can’t do it from the sidelines. During the 2014 Election cycle, 83% of 18-24 year olds chose NOT to vote, NOT to be heard. We want that to change!
 
The March 20th Gubernatorial Primary is coming up and the Cook County Clerk’s office urges all students to register and vote and then go one step further and apply to serve voters on Election Day in a suburban polling place.  Local democracy depends on the poll workers who take pride in making it possible for their fellow citizens to cast their ballots and have their voices heard.
 
There are two positions available for students: Election Judge or Equipment Manager. Both Election Judges and Equipment Managers assist voters and ensure the polling place is running smoothly. Equipment Managers are also responsible for setting up and maintaining the voting equipment. Due to the additional responsibility, Equipment Managers receive more training and get higher pay. Election Judges earn $190, Equipment Managers earn $340.
