Join as we learn the many benefits of traveling abroad and exploring other cultures away from your home country.  Discover how having a global perspective can boost your career.

Leading the discussion are three ASK mentors who went beyond leisure travel and decided to live and work outside the US:

ASK mentor Kelli McGee started her career in banking, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Economics and an MBA in International Business from DePaul University, and working as an Examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.  After a Peace Corps tour in Moldova and another in Romania, Kelli decided to fully dedicate her career to service.  She joined Depaul Ukraine as a consultant, helping the charity organization strengthen their operations as they serve the homeless youth of Ukraine.  In 2014, she returned to Chicago and joined Depaul USA as Director of Operations, supporting the nonprofit organization’s mission to provide people experiencing homelessness with purpose and hope for a positive future.

ASK mentor Michael Colella has over 5 years of experience in research, business development, communications, organizational leadership and strategic planning with various companies and non-profits both domestically and internationally. He has lived in Brazil and traveled throughout Europe, Central and South America and still has many big plans in regards to traveling and living abroad. He started his career in scientific research and has subsequently transitioned into business.  He is currently a Manager at InternshipDesk, a Chicago-based company that provides career development programming for both International (F1) students and American students both domestically and internationally. He obtained an undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Biological Sciences from DePaul University, an MA in Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and is currently completing an integrated marketing program at the University of Chicago.

ASK mentor Jorge Zavala’s motto is think globally, act locally.  Upon graduating from DePaul University with a degree in International Studies, he embarked on a journey to Southeast Asia where he served as an honorary ambassador to Thailand while working with numerous non-governmental organizations facilitating development across the region. Education, women’s rights, immigration, sustainability, and resource allocation were some of Jorge’s areas of focus while working across cultures in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia.  In addition to his affinity for development work, Jorge established a fair-trade program in Northern Thailand benefiting impoverished orphans. He is fluent in Spanish and French and conversational Japanese, Thai, and Mandarin Chinese. He is an active member of Amnesty International and the International Rescue Committee. In 2013, he ran his own grassroots campaign for Congress in the 4th congressional district of Illinois and was the youngest person in 2013-2014 to run for a congressional seat and hosted the only grassroots campaign in over 15 years to stay on the ballot for a House seat. He currently serves as the Creative Director for Prestige du Monde (PdM), Chicago’s premier boutique public relations and media agency for lifestyle and charity affairs, and owner of D’Blondie Coffee Company, an organic and fair-trade certified business focused on selling and distributing high-quality gourmet coffee, honey, and tea.
