How Long Will I Cry? Student Reading and E-book Launch Event

Harvey_How_Long_coverPlease join the DePaul Department of English and the DePaul University Library on Tuesday, November 5 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm in the John T. Richardson Library, Room 115 for a How Long Will I Cry? Student Reading and E-book Launch event.

How Long Will I Cry? is a unique collection of oral-history narratives collected by undergraduate and graduate students of creative writing at DePaul University. In 2011 and 2012, while more than 900 people were being murdered on the streets of Chicago, these students fanned out all over the city to interview people whose lives have been changed by the bloodshed. The resulting work has been adapted by the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre as a play for young adults and is now available in a collection that the Chicago Tribune calls an “incredibly rich and compelling examination” of the ways that violence affects us all.

In this program sponsored by the Department of English and the DePaul University Library, students who conducted interviews for How Long Will I Cry? will discuss their experiences in this collaborative story telling project and read excerpts from their work.

In addition, faculty members Miles Harvey, Michele Morano and Chris Green will discuss the Big Shoulders Books project and the decision to make the book freely available. In celebration of Open Access Week, the e-book version of this title will be launched at the event. Free copies of the book will be available, and student authors will be on hand for signing. Light refreshments will be served.

Big Shoulders Books produces one book each year that engages intimately with the Chicago community and gives graduate students in the DePaul University M.A. in Writing and Publishing program (along with select undergraduates) hands-on, practical experience in book publishing. BSB disseminates, free of charge, quality anthologies of writing by and about Chicagoans whose voices might not otherwise be shared. The DePaul University Library supports BSB as a unique component of its commitment to building collections documenting the life of the City of Chicago, supporting undergraduate and graduate student research, and contributing to the ongoing evolution of scholarly communication through the support of open-access publishing initiatives.
